Shakespeare in Firenze
Capturing Inclusivity and Modernity in a Theatre Poster Design
For the Affratellamento Theater in Florence, I had the unique opportunity to design posters for three of Shakespeare's plays, reimagined with a modern twist.
The theater company breathed new life into "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "The Tempest," and "Much Ado About Nothing," infusing them with powerful messages of inclusivity. Their productions highlighted strong female characters, introduced queer narratives - including a trans man playing a lead role and female couples - challenging traditional norms and embracing diversity.
My task was to visually represent this progressive and bold reinterpretation, creating posters that not only encapsulated the essence of each play but also reflected the company's commitment to contemporary themes of feminism and LGBTQ+ inclusion.
A Midsummer Night's Dream: Whimsy and Wonder
For "A Midsummer Night's Dream," I chose Bottom's iconic donkey head as the central focus. The poster features a vibrant yellow background contrasting with a pink subject, encapsulating the play's whimsical and fantastical nature.
The Tempest: Power and Turmoil
The Tempest" poster captures the drama of the storm that opens the play. I illustrated a towering wave poised to crash over the characters’ ship, set against a green background with the wave in striking blue. This design conveys the play's themes of chaos and transformation.
Much Ado About Nothing: Celebration and Intrigue
The poster for "Much Ado About Nothing" features a detailed party mask against a pine green background with a fuchsia hue. This choice reflects the play's themes of masquerade, romance, and deception, drawing the viewer into the story's festive yet mysterious atmosphere.
