We Left the Camp Singing

Visual Storytelling for a Powerful Documentary

Crafting the Movie Poster

The movie poster for "We Left the Camp Singing" was designed to be a visual prelude to the documentary's deep and moving story. The design process involved a meticulous blend of imagery and typography to capture the essence of the film: the story seen through Sofia’s eyes; the struggle, the hope, and the unyielding human spirit.

We Left the Camp Singing," commissioned by Sofia Tapinassi, is more than a documentary; it's a poignant narrative of resilience, hope, and the human spirit. This project delves into the profound experiences of those who have faced life in refugee camps during the holocaust, capturing their stories through a lens of dignity and strength.

My role in visually representing this documentary was deeply influenced by the raw, emotive sketches and drawings created by the prisoners themselves during their detention. These authentic artistic expressions served as the cornerstone for developing the movie poster, the website, and each illustration.

Designing the Digital Window

The website for "We Left the Camp Singing" serves as the digital gateway to this powerful story. My approach to the website design was to create an immersive experience, drawing visitors into the narrative through a mix of photos and illustrations trying to mirror the aesthetic and emotional gravity of the prisoners' sketches.

Illustrations with a Story to Tell

Each illustration crafted for "We Left the Camp Singing" was inspired by the stories told by Sofia and by the survivors. They aim to capture the essence of hope, despair, and resilience.

A Synthesis of Art and Storytelling

We Left the Camp Singing" represents a fusion of documentary filmmaking and visual artistry. The project is a testament to the power of creative collaboration and the importance of giving voice to stories that need to be heard. Through this work, we aim to inspire, inform, and ignite conversations about the human experience in refugee camps.
